I’ve been itching to get outside for the longest time. The itch hasn’t been getting worse since the Frontier died. As I wait for… something to happen with the truck, I decided to list my gear purchases in Excel. Main purpose is to learn more about Excel and to sob at lost dollar bills. The following are my most recent purchases.
- Osprey Atmos 65
- Bought at REI during their Memorial Day Sale. This is going to replace my Deuter Act Trail Pro 40. While wearing this pack at REI, I knew it was a huge upgrade from the incorrectly-fitted Deuter. I’ve had the Atmos 65 for about a month now but I haven’t gotten around to using it :(. I ultimately chose the 65L because of the noob mindset of “I might need more space”.
PAID: $209.02 - Hammock Gear Burrow Econ 20
- My camping experience heavily relied on a no-name sleeping bag I had in 6th grade- I definitely needed an upgrade. I chose a quilt because I like blankets. Like the Atmos, I haven’t had the opportunity to use this quilt. Well.. I used it one cold night in my bedroom when I had a fever. I was already bundled with two blankets but was still shivering.
PAID: $181.95 - Klymit Static V
- Never used a sleeping pad before so this was exciting. I tested it at home just for kicks. To me it takes about 15 breaths to fill. Seems comfortable enough. I didn’t do much studying on sleeping pads and noticed that this pad is only recommended during summer as the R number is low. Oh well, at least I didn’t pay full price.
PAID: $43.09 - Kelty Salida 2P
- Bought from B&H Photography. I like this tent a lot. Carolyn and I used it on our Zion trip and was spacious enough that we didn’t bump heads. Fairly lightweight and really easy to assemble. On the second night my sister set it up for us to try and finished setting it up in 5 minutes on her first try.
PAID: $112.46. - Stanley Camp Cook Set
- Bought the REI sale which was a mistake. This is cheaper on Amazon. Haven’t been used but it looks nifty. I’m following thegoatmumbler’s cook set to build mine.
PAID: $21.54 - Sawyer Mini
- Never used a water filter before so I’m pretty excited about this purchase. Bought because people were saying it fits easily with Smartwater bottles.
PAID: $18.31 - TOTAL SPENT: $586.37
I have a first-aid kit already, copious amount of sunscreen, headlamp and flashlights, a battery pack and cords, and clothing. Next purchase will probably be a better headlamp and a compass.
Whew. Who knew getting outdoors can cost a pretty penny? I justify these expenditures as something that I’m only going to do once or twice. I’m pretty sure the pack, quilt, and tent will last me years. My bank account is crying but my desire to GTFO is ever longing.
